Skyler's Favorite Game

If you’re like me, you’ve been asked “What do you do for fun?” and you might say in response “I like to play video games.” To the person who asked they will think of a handful of games in their head and assume you play all of them, but to you, you have just told them something so general that you could have just said “I have been known to breath from time to time.”

A question that soon follows is “So what’s your favorite video game?” It admittedly is a simple enough question to the average so-and-so. Some schmuck on the street could answer “Call of Halo 7: Advanced Skirmish Tactics,” and if you are anything like me, you cringe at that answer.

I mean there are so many games that I have played with so many unique qualities from each that I like. With the story from a Legend of Zelda, and the unique game play design from Borderlands, and the bar setting platforming of most any Mario game, it boils down to comparing Apples and Oranges and Screwdrivers and a 1922 Buick Roadster.

Sure you can go to the game you like the most RIGHT NOW, or a game that you are most looking forward to in a franchise, or even the game you remember sinking the most hours into. That’s a chump way out though. You know that you can’t do that but by now you are probably getting sweaty and red faced thinking about how to answer this question.

So instead of picking my favorite game, I’m going to talk about the game that has impacted me the most. With the hundreds of games I’ve played and the thousands of dollars I’ve spent collecting them I have to say that the one that has impacted me the most has got to be Pokémon Red for the Gameboy. This was the first game that really sucked me into it. I can remember the times before I started playing Pokémon. I was outgoing; I rode bikes, and played outside. This game steered me down the path of staying in dark rooms and staring at screens until my eyes were bloodshot.

While it sounds like I resent Pokémon for driving me to a life of being an introvert Pokémon was actually the first thing to introduce me to a counter culture. Without Pokémon, I more than likely would not have found my way into comic books, and then dungeons and dragons, and anime, and a lot of other stuff that I now have come to cherish. It is all because I popped a little red cartridge with a dragon on it into a big grey gameboy. Without that, I can tell you that I would have most likely been a completely different person. Pokémon was the first domino that pushed me into the videogame-nerdy-tech culture that most of us find ourselves in now.

So I may not be able to file down every game I’ve played to a number one spot, but I can at least indentify the game that has impacted me the most and that’s not nothing.

FOOTBAWL with Matt

As some of you may know from the podcast, I am a huge football fan. I love watching, debating, speculating. Especially that last one, speculating. So right now I'm going to speculate all over the place and suggest schools for Big 12 conference expansion. As some of you may know the Big 12 was recently left out of the college football playoff. The main culprit being that they do not have a conference championship game. To have a conference championship you need to have two divisions and a total of 12 teams. "But Matt!" "How does the Big 12 not meet those requirements?"Well casual observer, the Big 12 has 10 teams, not 12. The last huge wave of conference expansion saw the conference of 12 lose Colorado, Nebraska, Missouri, and Texas A&M while adding TCU and West Virginia, leaving them at 10. So far the Big 12 has stated that with a 10 team schedule all teams can play each other and leave them with "one true champion!" Except...they had co-champs this year in Baylor and TCU.

Current state of the conference

So the Big 12 needs at least two teams quick. There are quite a few viable options out there from conferences outside the power 5 (Big 12, Big 10, ACC, SEC, and Pac-12). I am going to break these down in order of who I think the Big 12 should extend an invite to. I'm typically going to be talking strictly football here but I might mention other sports. Let's start off with some honorable mentions.

The Oklahoma/Texas Grab Bag

The Big 12 is centered around Texas and Oklahoma. not just the teams, but the regions. Their headquarters is in Dallas. Their basketball championship frequents Oklahoma City. Six of the conferences 10 schools are located in those two states. It would make sense to add teams from the region. That being said the region is kind of tapped. Not many viable expansion candidates are left. I know certain people would love to revive part of the Southwest Conference and bring in Houston, Rice, and SMU I just don't see it happening outside of maybe Houston. Still though, given time a school from the region may just be a viable candidate.

UConn

UConn is interesting. They are almost like a major free agent without a home. Currently they reside in the American Athletic Conference after the Big East decided to drop football. UConn is a large school in a great market with a very strong basketball team. Adding them to the Big 12 would give the conference a huge basketball boost. The major problem is how far they are from the Big 12. If you thought West Virginia was out there UConn would be insane. This team seems like a better fit for the ACC, if it ever gets that invite it's after.

Notre Dame

Stop right there. I know what your thinking. Notre Dame is never going to become a full member of any conference. Notre Dame just signed a partnership with the ACC. Notre Dame would rather join them or the Big 10 before the Big 12. I know all of this. But if the Big 12 wanted to make a huge impact Notre Dame would be the biggest. Instant brand recognition, a national TV market, and a huge fan base. Not only that but Notre Dame would be ready to compete in every sport. It's not going to happen, but if it did I think it would be a very nice fit.

#10 Northern Illinois

Kind of out of left field, I know. Northern Illinois would be a nice addition to the conference in my eyes. I know most MAC teams are pretty content with where they are at. But this team could contribute pretty quickly. In football they bring a competent team that has more wins in the past couple years than Iowa State has maybe ever. All joking aside Iowa State is a team they have beaten recently. Plus they fit into my favorite motto when it comes to expansion. "They have to be better than Kansas right?" What I mean by that is this team would by no means be the bottom feeder in football and switch Kansas with TCU means the same in basketball. If they can out perform teams already in the conference what's keeping them from getting in? School size, probably. But a move east could not hurt the Big 12 at all. West Virginia's travel budget would like it.

#9 South Florida

Ok so, they're not quite a bottom feeder...right? This team has seen success in football, even though it's been a while. Also while holding a decent hold in basketball. Couple that with their large growth and TV market this would not be a bad addition. Plus as I've stated before a move east could be beneficial.

#8 East Carolina

It doesn't get much more east than this! East Carolina is a team on the rise in all major sports. Especially football where they have had a knack for knocking off ACC teams for years. Couple that with another decent TV market and you have another buddy for West Virginia.

#7 Memphis

Blah blah move east blah blah. I'm serious here, people! East is the way to go, fill in the area between West Virginia and the rest of the conference! Memphis is a team with a decent hold in football and a large following in basketball. If the Big 12 really wanted to bolster their basketball ranks here's a great fit. Once again you're looking at a good TV market and a great fan base.

#6 Colorado State

Oh NOW we're moving west. While I think the future of the Big 12 would be better off in the east I can't ignore teams in the west. Colorado State is primed for a move up. Both major sports perform very well. Colorado is a state the Big 12 has had success with before. Let's also not forget that with this addition the Big 12 would once again have the best team in Colorado.

#5 Marshall

You really want to help West Virginia out? Add a team they can get to on foot. Marshall is already a rival of West Virginia. They're in the same state. They have name recognition, and a pretty good football team. This would certainly be a step up from West Virginia's current rivalry week game with Iowa State. Marshall may seem out of the ordinary but I think if the Big 12 follows my lead they would be just fine in the "East" division.

#4 Boise State

Oh boy, Boise State. America's darling underdog who became America's thorn in the side when it turned out they weren't a flash in the pan. This team would be able to compete right away in football. Their basketball team is approaching respectability. They have a complete hold on their region. The only things against them are the small size of their school and the lack of a viable TV market. Speaking strictly sports, and not money, I would love to see this team get a shot at a power 5 conference. Pac-12 may be a better fit but they're not expanding...yet.

#3 UCF

Central Florida needs to move up and now. They have great teams in both major revenue sports. They have a great TV market in Orlando. They can recruit Florida, which is a state loaded with options. To be honest every compliment I've given above can apply here. And before you yell it at me..yes..it would be a nice move east.

#2 BYU

Well this must have been obvious. BYU is sort of like Notre Dame in a way. They are not a full member of any conference. They have a national fan base. They can recruit just about anywhere. What sets them apart though is they would benefit from a conference. BYU has been in conferences before and probably will be in the future. It would be mutually beneficial to the Big 12 and BYU to pair up. Plus, BYU has already stated they would love to join the Big 12.

#1 Cincinnati

Finally, everything I want for the Big 12 in one team. Excellent in many sports, in the middle of a recruiting pipeline, great fan base, large TV market. Not only that but they've been in a major conference in the Big East and won championships there. Cincinnati is ready to reclaim it's spot in the big time and the Big 12 is the perfect fit. Look back on this article in 2 years and tell me I called this one.

So, there you have it. Listen up Big 12! I could have kept going honestly. Maybe a team from a major conference would jump ship? Florida State and Clemson were rumored at one point. Maybe a team from FCS could make the jump. Like Northern Iowa, North Dakota State, Montana, or Montana State. I know it sounds absurd but give them a few years. It can be done, see: State, Boise and F, US. I hope you enjoyed my speculation as much as I did writing it. Who knows maybe I'll talk sports more in the future.

UPDATE: I wrote this article on December 17. Scheduled it to come out December 26. Well according to this article on December 19 I am totally right and handsome.

Andy's Favorite Game

The Lambda symbol: A radioactive decay symbol constantly used in the half-life equation.
This symbol was, to me, the highlight and the end of the golden years of PC gaming. Bear with me. I want you to try and get an idea as to why Half-Life 2 is my favorite game... ever.
I call the years of 1998-2004 the Golden Age of Gaming for a multitude of reasons. Half-life and Valve together helped shape what gaming is today. Valve set the bar... twice. My cousin was my source for new games and I remember around Christmas of '98 he told me about a shooter game that was like nothing he had ever played before. He had previously introduced me to Doom, Quake, and even Command and Conquer (R.I.P Westwood Studios). Mike and I went down to his computer and he booted up Half-life. Now at this point, I want you to try truly understand the leap that Half-life made

This is a screenshot of Quake 2 from 1997. (http://i.imgur.com/3LYfg4d.jpg) This was the precedent set for first-person shooters at the time. Quake 2 was fun, frantic and had awesome guns, but other than that there wasnt much else to it.

This is Half-Life.  (http://i.imgur.com/G9VITrn.jpg) Everything had much more detail. There were colors and shades, enemies felt like enemies and not just bad dudes that rush you. You could actually interact with objects in the environment rather than simply pushing buttons and shooting barrels causing explosions. Boxes broke when you throw them, chairs moved when you pushed them over and the enviroment was part of the game. It was all so engrossing- I just got swept away. Never had I played a game where there was no down time either, the story kept you moving and the game never seemed to end- in a good way of course.
Flash forward to 2004. In this year there were 3 games that came out which propelled first-person shooters into the next generation of graphics and story-telling. First was Far Cry, Doom 3 and Half-life 2. The year prior to this saw the release of the original Call of Duty which looked like this. (http://i.imgur.com/9dcK6uU.jpg) Not bad, but this was Far Cry five months after Call of Duty was released. (http://i.imgur.com/6Zz7Yf9.jpg) Then a couple months later Doom 3 was released. (http://i.imgur.com/2kaaITD.jpg) Then Half-Life 2 (http://i.imgur.com/HIyVb7e.jpg)
No game up until this point had ever been so interactive and realistic- it blew my mind. The very first time you get that gravity gun throw all the boxes, man. Every character had

facial expressions and the voice acting was amazing! It made you close to the characters around you. I had the feels. Just like with the original Half-life, the second one set the bar yet again and I think it really changed the way games told stories and played out. I play the Half-life series annually from beginning  to end. Writing this makes me want to play them again this year. Stream idea!!!

Let's Build a Team!

As many of you know from the podcast we often partake in Heroscape. Heroscape is a game similar to Warhammer where you create a 3-D map and use figures and cards to conquer said map. What is great about Heroscape is how expansive the super hero cards are. Thanks to Heroscapers.com nearly any hero you can think of across all brands are available to play with.

Now Heroscape is an extremely challenging game when it comes to building your team. You can just pick your favorite heroes, and sure, that's fun. But if you're going to compete with anyone who knows what they are doing you MUST form a synergy. That takes a lot of careful planning and drafting. There are many teams to choose from depending on what cards and figures you have. I'm going to break down a pretty simple team to start with, Mutants with Outcasts. The reason Mutants are simple to put together is they are HUGE. As long as you get Apocalypse or Professor X to start your team you can do well with just about any other mutants.

I am going to list these in order of importance to the team. Not in order of importance to draft. Once you start playing you should know who will go fast and plan your draft accordingly. While you may think getting your favorite hero or villain with your first pick is the way to go you may miss out on someone more important, while your favorite hero will be there later anyway. Let's start off with "linchpins" these are characters that hold your synergy together. You can find linchpins in this really great Faction/Group guide. We're going to shoot for a 2000 point army. Now, let's get started...

The Man

Professor Xavier is the glue to hold this entire team together. You should keep him alive at ALL COSTS. He's not very strong, he doesn't have a lot of life, but once he is gone you're fighting an up hill battle. Let's look at that first ability, Mutant Mind Link. With that ability you can place all your numbered order markers on this card and take a turn with TWO mutants within 10 spaces. What that means is in one round, instead of 3 turns, you get 6. That is a massive advantage to your team. Keep him alive, trust me.

The Buffer

Sage takes your entire team to another level. Sage can increase the attack of your mutants by 1. You will be able to choose which 3 mutants to put your markers on. To do this you must reveal your "X" order marker. Which means your first 3 rounds you will be putting it on Sage for sure. Since you have Professor X you will be able to reveal the "X" and place an enhancement marker after he takes a turn with her. Let's not forget she can also move around order markers and raise a 20 sided die roll by one. Both will be an advantage a little later in the match.

The Surprise

Destiny is only 55 points. Destiny will also for sure be there in later rounds. Value wise though, she is crucial. She can raise a 20 sided die roll of any outcast by 3 and mutants that are not outcasts by 1. To do this you must keep your "X" order marker on her when you plan to use it. Pair this with Sage in clear sight and suddenly you've got a plus 4 to a 20 sided die roll. This will come into play very soon. Now, that does it for our linchpins, let's look at the rest of our army.

The Villain

Magneto is a beast. He has a long range of 7 and a pretty good attack of 5 (I would suggest adding 1 to that with Sage enhancements). Add that to a great defense of 7 and move of 5 and you've got your front line infantry. Magneto's magnetic assault requires you to hit a 20 sided die roll of 9. Add Destiny and Sage and you only have to hit a 5 to cause an automatic wound AND you can use it again (although without Destiny, you can still use Sage). He cannot be taken control of by an opponent. He even has a boost. He can change one unique mutant to an outcast. They would then benefit from Destiny and another character later.

The Sniper

Cable is an incredibly popular choice whether you are building a mutant army or not. His stats right off the bat look, good, not amazing. That's until you enhance him with Sage. Cable's attack is typically 4 but with his sighting ability he adds TWO attack dice if he is at least one spot higher. Couple that with sage and suddenly Cable has 7 attack and with the aptly named "Double Attack" he can attack twice per turn. Cable has caused a lot of headaches in our games because he is so sneaky good when used correctly.

The Witch

Scarlet Witch is not quite the heavy hitter for your team but can cause problems for your opponents. She is also a very popular choice in our games regardless of synergy. First of all she is very hard to kill. With her Hex-Sphere Disturbance when an opponent attacks, you roll your 20 sided die before defending. If you roll 5 or hire (4 with Sage in clear sight) your opponent must re-roll all skulls. If you are hit, that's okay too, she has Magical Defense. With that power the most wounds you can take per attack where attack dice are rolled is one. The opponent could roll 12 skulls to your 0 shield and instead of taking 12 wounds, you take one. Magical Defense does not work against cards that also have that power but at the same time that's only a few (Dr. Fate, Dr. Strange, Zatana, Enchantress, etc.) Her main ability though is easily her Chaos Magic Curse. Once your curse an opponent they must roll the 20 sided die and roll 9 or higher to use ANY power on their card. Including flying and super strength. This girl causes quite the headache.

The Knockout

Psylocke is the third suggestion for a Sage enhancement. That would bring her attack up to respectability. Her best feature though is that Psychic Knife. With that ability if you roll a 20 on a 20 sided die roll your opponent is automatically destroyed. Here's where you can make it more deadly. At the beginning of the game use Magneto to make Psylocke an outcast. Now with that you can take a shot with Psychic knife adding 3 to the roll from Destiny and 1 from Sage. Now your auto-kill only takes a 16 or higher. That is pretty good odds to take an opponent out in one hit.

The Commander

Mystique is a fun little card. She can impersonate a character from an opponent's team. Which means only that card can attack her. Also, she can take control of outcasts after completing her turn. He ability is not quite as good as Professor X considering the range is shorter and you must roll for it but it's decent none the less. She is a great addition to the team especially if you lose Professor X.

The Expendable One

Avalanche is a great addition to get the most out of your points. Before this pick you should only have 150 points left. Even though it's not much he still fits the mold of the team and has an outcast ability of his own. If you don't want to use Avalanche that's okay. He can be swapped out easy for BlobPyro, or Toad. Depending of course how strict your game is on points. We usually let players go 20 points over, which would let you get Blob, who by the way would help in defending Professor X.

There you have it! Your first team! Mutants are definitely the easy to use hard to master type. There are so many more mutants than members of other synergies. Everything here is a suggestion and doesn't have to be followed perfectly (although this team did win me a game ;)) I would suggest taking a look at the faction guide and seeing what you would like.

Tam's Favorite Game

THE LEGEND OF ZELDA OCARINA OF TIME!!

This game is a master piece. I can say there are few games that have defined me as a
person as much as this game has. It has action, adventure, thought provoking game play and
most important of all teaches you the difference between right and wrong. When I was a kid
growing up and playing video games everything i had been exposed to was very linear and
obvious what to do. Go right and win the game...and after that… go right again. Yes the plot
was important but the game felt more about “making the next jump” not actually rescuing the
princess from a Giant Turtle. Now i'm not saying these games are bad, in fact I still jump on
Super Mario World about once every month and do these crazy platforming speed runs as best
as I can. but Ocarina of Time was the first game that made me really feel like I was apart of the
world and the actions I had affected the world around me. Which BLEW MY MIND!!! Feeling
responsibility for the people of Hyrule was extremely important in developing my character
growing up. Figuring out and seeing the difference between right and wrong and how it affected
everyone was eye opening to say the least.

Onto the game! like i said before Ocarina of Time is a great game for so many reasons
that I couldn't possibly list them all here but i will list the one that I feel is most important.
Ocarina of Time tells the story of an orphan boy who is an outcast from his friends. He set onto a
full blown adventure by Princess Zelda to help her defeat an evil stranger bent on controlling the
land and her kingdom, Hyrule. Everyone has had hardships and have felt like an outcast before
and despite how you have felt you have needed to make the right decision. I know our lives
and choices don't affect the salvation of a kingdom but everyday we make tough choices not
because we want to but because we NEED to just as much as Link does on this one quest.
I took a break from the LOZ for a very, very long time. during middle school I jumped on
the Halo bandwagon for the exact same reason I have listed above. I needed to feel the
responsibility of saving the land and in this case the whole galaxy. but with the announcement
of a new Zelda title called “Twilight princess” Nintendo bit me with the LOZ bug once more and I
donned my green hat and tunic once again to bring peace to the land. the reason I bring this up
is because i can not talk about OOT without Twilight princess as well. Twilight Princess did
everything OOT did but better! the action was more intense the adventure grander the puzzles
devastating and the story made you feel like its not just your life on the line but the life of all of
the people you have met on your journey. It reminded me of all the adventures and feelings i
had as a child but more so.

To wrap this all up the legend of zelda series has had some amazing titles as well as
some titles that have been less than sub par but every 3D Zelda game I have ever played has
pushed my emotions to the brink not because of killing monsters and solving puzzles but the
relationship my actions feel to have on the world.

Lol Craigslist (Oklahoma City, Oklahoma)

Greetings! I'm back! Some of you may already know me but for those of you who don't, my name is Craig Slist. I was at one point the most prominent person who took screen shots and made fun of them. I haven't been around for a while. In fact, the last time I was seen doing this was in February of 2011. Let's just say some things happened and I was in a Lexington, Kentucky jail for a while. Not to worry though, I'm out and just in time for the holidays! Let's get started shall we? What do we got?!

Jesus
Ladies and gentlemen what we have here are a pair of death tires. Think your tires grip to the road TOO well? Slap these on your car for some pants pissing excitement. You'd probably stop better if you put a pair of skis on your car.

"Free sex sofa! The wife and I bought this leather sofa to go to pound town on but it won't hold up. Good for any sexually devoid couple because it will last longer. And hey, if you're not into furniture destroying sex but are into looking like a redneck, slap a slip cover on it! No one will know you bought a sex sofa."

Every now and then you'll come across someone on craigslist who gets it. He's marketing to the hard of hearing so the title is in ALL CAPS. Brilliant. I bet he would trade his hearing aids if you had a seeing aid for his camera. Wait...was this picture taken in 2010?

"Looking for a woman with big baps for reasons. If you are that woman please contact me. But don't solicit me offers. I don't want to be solicited while soliciting. Please call....please."

This would be perfect for anyone who just bought a sex sofa but can't keep up! Only problem with this listing is they ask you to call or text...without leaving a number. So Close!

Why would you want to get any other free piece of furniture on craigslist for your furry friend? Why not get some patched together SEVEN FOOT heavy ass armoire made into a dog bed. Also, WHY ARE YOU YELLING AT ME I ALREADY GOT THE HEARING AID.

♛ YES FINALLY A PLACE TO DUMP BIG LOGS I AM HOME

"Want to complete your gross sex set today? What we have here is a barely working but totally nasty sex tub. Pair this with your sex sofa and sex jumper for the best in creepy fornicating. First CUM first serve."

What a big log of crap. Trust me, I have friends who make money online and I know exactly how to do it. I'll let you in on the secret here.

Matt's Favorite Game

Holy crap, folks. Can you imagine what is about to take place? I'm about to use this blog for WRITING. Wow. Not only that but we'll have written pieces all week! Truly these are the best times we live in. One of the running themes this week will be us letting you in on our personal tastes. Specifically, our favorite games. Tam, Andy, Skyler, and myself will have a short article on why we picked our games and what makes it so special. Now...let's get into this.

Ohhhh baby.

That's right. Super Mario Brothers 3 is my favorite game. Without this game I probably would not be here gushing over any game right now. This is what got me into the scene. Also, it's the only game (except maybe Wolfenstein 3D) I remember playing in my old house that I lived in until I was four. This is the granddaddy of them all for me. It came out two years before I was born so it was basically primed and ready for me to come out of the womb.

Fond memories.

I really never knew why my parents decided to go with the NES over the Genesis. I guess that's just how it shook out. This happened to be the only video game I can really remember my dad and I playing competitively. The story goes that he was out of work following sinus surgery and this is what he had during the day. So we played, and played, and played. So much so that my dad was actually pretty damn good. Maybe I should get him to play now, hell, I've got this on NES still.

No! Hit the P first!

Even today I find myself coming back to this game. I've had an idea in the back of my mind to play this on the podcast stream one day. Regardless of streaming it or not I do come back to this game every year. I also find myself seeing it in other games (Shovel Knight's over world most recently). It just goes to show how long this has endured. I know most people will argue that Super Mario World was the best of the first four. And while I can see what they mean I will continue to disagree with them. For me this will always be the best, my favorite game, Super Mario Brothers 3.
